Plunder Skull Timer (Witches Festival)
Version: 1.1.1
by: code65536 [More]

What is the Plunder Skull Timer and what does it do?

This simple addon displays the amount of time that has elapsed since the last time you looted a Plunder Skull.

Since the Plunder Skulls from the Witches Festival appear have an internal drop cooldown, it's useful to see how long it's been since your last loot.

How do I use this addon?

Just install the addon! The timer will automatically appear when you loot a Plunder Skull, and the timer will automatically reset when you loot another Plunder Skull. If you haven't looted a Plunder Skull in a long time (over 15 minutes), the timer will automatically stop and hide itself.

Once the timer appears, you can reposition it by using your mouse to drag it around.

You can manually hide the timer by double-clicking on it.

You can disable the auto-hide feature (so that the timer will run indefinitely) by typing the /pstautohide command into chat.

How long is the cooldown on Plunder Skulls?

Based on my testing, the cooldown is exactly 3 minutes for bosses in group dungeons. I think it's safe to assume that the same cooldown applies to other instanced content, such as trials and arenas. It's been reported that public dungeon bosses also share the same 3-minute cooldown. Reports on the forums suggest that the cooldown is higher for overland and delve bosses, but I have not tested this to confirm nor do I know what their cooldowns are.
  • Version 1.1.1 (2016/10/24)
    • The timer will now start counting from a combat end event, if there was one 15 seconds or less before a skull pickup (The game's cooldown starts when the boss is killed, but since there is no way to track that, the addon uses the skull pickup time instead as a close approximation; this change refines that heuristic by using the combat end time, if there was a combat end event shortly before a skull pickup)

  • Version 1.1.0 (2016/10/17)
    • The timer is now color-coded: red from 00:00 to 2:29, yellow from 2:30 to 2:59, and green from 3:00 onwards
    • Right-clicking on the timer will post the current elapsed time into group chat

  • Version 1.0.1 (2016/10/14)
    • The timer will no longer trigger from skulls looted by group members

  • Version 1.0.0 (2016/10/14)
    • Initial version

Maybe that coud be displayed in the timer? Like yellow text when 3 min green text when 5 min +
Not necessarily true. I farmed a delve boss (Mati in Mehrune's Sprite, Auridon) and the Plunder Skulls were directly tied to his cool-down at 4 minutes.

That's correct. The game's cooldown is from boss death to boss death, but this addon measures from skull pickup. The reason is that there is no reliable way to know when a boss with a skull drop has died. Most of the time, people loot the boss immediately after death, within just a second or two, so this is usually a close and good enough approximation.
Got an idea: Take the smaller timestamp of loot or combat end? Still not 100%, just an idea.
I've added that to the new 1.1.1 that I just posted...

As you said, it's not perfect, and there are limitations:
  • Only combat-end events prior to a skull pickup will be considered. There are many cases where a character would be stuck in combat after a boss dies or where there are adds still fighting after a boss is dead and looted.
  • There's a 15s threshold--any end-of-combat events that happen more than 15s before a skull loot won't be considered. I think 15s is more than enough for someone to loot a boss, and I would rather that the timer err on the side of caution and overstate the cooldown than understate it, so the 15s limit is there to preclude any weird scenarios.

In my brief testing of this change, this now adjusts the time a couple of seconds or so closer to what it should be in many cases, so it's a nice albeit small refinement of the timing heuristic.

Okey, so I know why I was getting inconsistent results before. The in-game drop timer actually starts when the boss dies. But since can't loot the millisecond the boss dies the counter will sometimes get the time wrong. But the actual drop time while camping a delve boss is 4 mins.

In the new version that I just posted, right-clicking on the timer will post a message to chat with the elapsed time.

Based on my experience the general drop timer is 3 minutes. But if you keep killing the same boss over and over the timer is 5 minutes because the boss loot drop timer is 5 minutes.

Edit: After some more accurate testing the same-boss timer is actually somewhere between 3:35 to 3:50 minutes.

Edit2: I am really confused. I've now also gotten a few skulls at the 3:20 mark while camping the same boss. 90% of the time tho I will get no drop at that mark. Maybe it's random from 3 to 4 minutes?

The 3 minute (roughly) timer is also good for Public Dungeons
