UPDATE: I have done some restructuring, mainly removing layout files outside of this addon upload. This is so that people can use this addon with popular addon management programs. I still haven't found a way to pull this addon off without using keyboard layouts, and unless someone knows how and tells me then I probably never will because I don't have time working on it. The procedure is still the same as below, but you gotta download the layouts seperately, I'll link

This only works between people who all have the addon installed
If you have this addon installed and try to use å or ø to someone who doesnt have it then they will see weird symbols instead.

A workaround for the lack of the Norwegian / Danish / Swedish letter(s) Å and Ø

I couldn't find any other alternatives, so I spent a couple of hours looking into a workaround. If anyone has a better solution or suggestions please let me know.

What I did was that I change the normal font slightly, replacing "useless" symbols like upside down exclamation point and questionmark, the paragraph symbol, and the YEN sign into lower and uppercase åÅ and øØ. Then using a custom keyboard layout that remaps the øå keys to these we can type and see these characters ingame. There's keyboard layouts for Danish, Swedish and Norwegian included but do read the readme, keyboard layouts can be a bit confusing and I've only tested on win7, the layouts are set per application, but does not seem to stick after application restart, so I found that making a keyboard shortcut to the custom ESO layout was the best way (and let all other programs use the default layout)

Installation guide

1. Install this addon just like any other, it allows you to see å and ø

2. Download the keyboard layout packs seperately in the provided links, there are also non-executable
versions available for the careful one, and instructions on how to "compile" these into an install package can be found at the bottom of this guide. The layout will allow you to type å and ø.

These links are NOT from esoui, the files are stored on my own server for now, because I couldn't find a way to store extra files here. Just so you are informed, you are not downloading this from esoui. They are perfectly safe though

3. You need to tell windows that ESO will be using the new keyboard layout

in windows 7:
go to control panel -> clock, language and region -> change keyboards or other input methods -> change keyboards ->

You should see something like this

Make sure that the standard layout for your language is ontop of the ESO layout, so that it is default
If the new layout isn't on the list, click add, and under your language on the list, and under keyboards find the new one and add it

Now click Advanced key settings at the top right

Click change key sequence and set a key sequence for both the standard keyboard layout and the new ESO layout for easy switching (you dont have to keep switching all the time, just once everytime you start ESO)


I used CTRL+SHIFT+2 for the ESO keyboard, and CTRL+SHIFT+1 for my standard


Now start ESO, and once you're ingame do your key sequence to set the layout to ESO keyboard, and it should be working. If you see weird symbols outside of ESO when typing å and ø, just do your standard keyboard key sequence (CTRL SHIFT 1 in my case)

in Windows 8:
Go to control panel -> clock, language and region -> language -> advanced settings
under "switching input methods" check Let me set a different input method for each app window

Click "Change language bar hot keys" then set key sequences same way as for win7


Extra step for people who don't like running .exe's

1. Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator 1.4 https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=22339
2. Install it and run it, and open one of the layouts from MSKLC source files folder in the addon download as source file, click project-> build DLL and setup package
3. run this installation package instead of what I included

Uninstallation guide (win 7)

1. Remove the addon as normal
2. re-run the keyboard layout exe and choose remove
if you deleted it you can download it here and just run it, theres other ways too but I havent looked into it yet, it's just a standard windows keyboard layout google it if unsure
