TraitBuddy  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)
Version: 7.2
by: Weolo [More]
TraitBuddy is an addon which tries to help you easily manage and keep track of what crafting research traits all your characters know. Great for those alt'o'holics out there just like myself.

I have expanded many game tooltips so that the information you want to see is right there on the item where you need it. There is also a custom screen if you prefer to see all the research in one place.

In case you are unsure what an alt is, it is a term to describe another/alternative character.

This addon is for Blacksmithing, Clothing, Woodworker and Jewellery traits as the other professions don't have traits you can research.

The latest version of addon library LibAddonMenu is required and will need to be installed separately.

Features
  • Expanded in-game tooltips:
Bag, loot, mail, buyback, trade, guild store search, guild store listings, links placed in chat, quest rewards, crafting, equipped items and motifs
  • See the traits your character and your alts know
  • See the traits your character and your alts are researching
  • Automatically knows when your research has finished. You don't need to log on to your alts for it to update.
  • See the motifs your character and your alts know
  • Research overview screen
  • Compact movable window
  • Allows you to view any of your alts by simply picking them from a dropdown or using an icon bar
  • The screen you see will be just as if you had logged on to that alt
  • You choose which alts are included/compared
  • Customisable icon and text colours
  • Translated into English, French, German, Japanese and Russian
  • Supports gamepad mode
  • Ability to filter motifs, unknown, almost completed etc
  • List of all crafted sets with details of their bonuses and locations
  • Support for other addons such as Inventory Grid View and Inventory Insight
  • Icons in inventory similar to what ResearchAssistant used to do
  • Plus a lot more...

Check out the attached screenshots for a small sample of what the addon offers.

What do the icons mean?
Green Tick
The selected character has researched that trait.

Orange Tick
At least one or more of your characters has completed researching that trait.
But not the currently selected character.

Blue Hourglass
The selected character is researching that trait.

Orange Hourglass
No characters have completed researching that trait but one or more of your characters have started to learn it.

The colours can be customised from the options.

How to set it up
  • Log in to each character one by one so TraitBuddy can automatically work its magic
  • Check out the tooltips on items with traits and motifs
There are 3 ways to open the TraitBuddy window
  1. Bind a key
  2. Use the buttons added to the corners of the crafting stations, skill screen and guild store
  3. Use the chat commands /traitbuddy and /traitbuddyoptions
Use any combination you prefer.
Binding a key is done from the normal ESO options screen
  • Bring up the ESO Options > Controls > Keybindings and scroll down until you see "TraitBuddy Addon"
  • Choose a key you would like to use to show and hide the window
  • Personally I bind the ] key

Info for other Addon makers
Detect when mousing over a trait in TraitBuddy
In your onLoad function
Lua Code:
  1. CALLBACK_MANAGER:RegisterCallback("TB-OnTraitMouseUp", OnTraitMouseUp)
Then add a new function to do your custom stuff
Lua Code:
  1. local function OnTraitMouseUp(craftingSkillType, researchLineIndex, traitIndex)
  2.     d(zo_strformat("DEBUG: OnTraitMouseUp <<1>> <<2>> <<3>>", tostring(craftingSkillType), tostring(researchLineIndex), tostring(traitIndex)))
  3. end

If you have ideas to improve this addon or have found a bug please either post on the comments section of this addon page or send me a private message.

I hope you like it and find it useful.
See you in game @Weolo on EU Server

Delete the TraitBuddy SavedVariables file
Install my latest version.
Log on to each character again.

That will sort everything out
Hi Weolo,

that totally did the trick. Pretty sure had the right version installed. But looks like I indeed had a previous version installed once and then deinstalled without deleting saved vars.

Thanks a bunch!

not entirely sure, but might be I once had it already installed, then deinstalled when finished with my main character research. And now reinstalled because doing it on my alts...No idea if I had variables deleted on deinstall or not....just in case that is the root of the troubles

Hi Rick_S1

That is already possible in TraitBuddy.
Log in with a character, Escape > Settings > Addons > TraitBuddy
Scroll down to the Appearance section and choose whatever colours you want for the icons in the TraitBuddy screens.
Or use the chat command /traitbuddyoptions

Question A small suggested change

Could you please make the color of the checkmarks the same as the color of the total traits known for each item? My brain seems to have trouble coordinating them when a master crafter of mine is making gear to research for my other characters. Thank you.

Hi Hamfast

Any addon can generate the 'too many anchors' error.
The normal cause for too many anchors error is when you have a large number of addons installed and the game just gets really confused when it's trying to figure out what size a control should be. The anchor error can then show against anyone of your addons but it does not mean it was that addon which caused the issue in the first place.

The too many anchor errors have been around for 5 years which is really unfortunate.

I have made many attempts to ensure that TraitBuddy is not making these worse for people. I have set control sizes and dimensions so no controls calculate their own dimensions, and I have added XML attributes which means the controls should not calculate their anchors.

Luckily it's now a very rare thing for the research times to be off.
It can happen if your account if your ESO Plus membership changed.
On logging onto a character that characters research times are updated 3 times at 10, 20 and 30 seconds to try and ensure the times are accurate.

Wrong time calculation

There seems to be an error with time calculation. TraitBuddy just showed me that researching Shoes has finished, but it has not. Still 32m left. I've checked it on the crafting table.

Thank you for adding support for a gamepad in the tooltips. It helps immensely with research mgmt on multiple toons.

Workaround for now, after /reloadui or log in open the inventory at least once and close it again. After that, the bank deposit should work.
Thanks. I'll let you know if I have this issue again and if your workaround resolves it.
