Smart Looter  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)
Version: 1.0.12
by: code65536 [More]
Ever wish you could turn auto loot on when gathering mats, and then flip it off afterwards? Smart Looter is a better alternative to the game's Auto Loot feature that will auto-loot anything that does not consume additional inventory space.

If it can be placed in your craft bag or tacked onto an existing stack of that item in your backpack, it will be auto-looted. If not, you can still loot it normally as usual. If every item was auto-looted by Smart Looter, then you won't even see the loot dialog, similar to the game's auto loot feature.

So how does Smart Looter work, exactly?
  • If you have the craft bag, then all crafting materials will be auto-looted. Very useful when harvesting nodes or farming provisioning containers.
  • If you don't have the craft bag, or if the crafting material is stolen, or if the item is not a crafting material at all, then it will check if there is an existing stack in your inventory that this item can be added to. If there is, the item will be auto-looted.
    • For example, let's say you currently have 100 lockpicks in your inventory. If you open a backpack containing a lockpick, it will be auto-looted since it can be added to the existing stack of 100.
    • As another example, let's say you don't have the craft bag and you have 198 Rubedite Ore in your inventory. You mine a node and get 3 more ores. These ores will not be auto-looted because the existing stack in your inventory is too full to accommodate them.
  • Items that are not auto-looted can still be looted normally. If there are items that were not auto-looted, the loot window will be shown with the unlooted items and you can choose to either loot them normally or ignore them. You will not see a loot window if all items were auto-looted.
    • For example, let's say you don't have any basic Essence of Magicka potions. You kill an enemy and they drop a potion. If you manually loot this potion, then the next time you kill an enemy that drops an Essence of Magicka, it will be auto-looted because it can be stacked with the potion that you had just manually looted.

How does Smart Looter handle gold and other currencies?
  • Gold, if it's not stolen, will always be auto-looted.
  • Tel Var stones will also be auto-looted, unless they are in a coffer (e.g., the Light Tel Var Satchel rewards from Imperial City quests) and you are currently in Imperial City/Sewers (since players typically want to keep stones safe inside containers if possible).
  • Capped currencies--transmute crystals and event tickets--will be auto-looted only if looting them will not overflow your currency cap.
    • For example, if you currently have 64 crystals and you just completed vMA, the 4 crystals in the final chest will be auto-looted since it will not exceed your crystal limit.
    • As another example, if you currently have 997 transmute crystals and you just completed vDSA, you will not auto-loot the 5 crystals from the final chest. You can choose to either manually loot them and lose 2 crystals, or you could quickly port out, use up some crystals, and then port back to loot the chest.
  • Capped currencies found inside coffers and other inventory containers only be auto-looted in the case of transmute crystals that will not overflow the cap and in quantities of 20 or less. I.e., "large" geodes will not be auto-looted since they are an efficient way that players often use to store excess crystals. Small geodes will be auto-looted (if doing so won't overflow the cap) because it is possible to "store" crystals in 25-crystal increments through the reconstruction system.

What about stealing?
  • Stolen items and stolen gold that normally appear in a loot window will be auto-looted only if the player is currently in stealth.
  • Remember that stolen items can only be stacked with other stolen items.
    • For example, if you currently have 100 "clean" lockpicks and you open a backpack containing a stolen lockpick, you will not auto-loot that lockpick. Once you've manually stolen that lockpick, thus starting a new stolen lockpick stack in your inventory, future stolen lockpicks that you encounter will be auto-looted.

How do I use it?

Just install it and go! There are no options to configure. If you currently have the in-game Auto Loot feature enabled, you will need to disable that as it obviously will conflict with Smart Looter.
  • Version 1.0.12 (2021/06/01)
    • API version bump for Update 30 (Blackwood)

  • Version 1.0.11 (2021/03/08)
    • API version bump for Update 29 (Flames of Ambition)

  • Version 1.0.10 (2020/11/23)
    • Smart Looter will now use LootAll if the number of different slots to be looted in a single action exceeds 20, to avoid the issue of triggering an excessive-message server kick; in practice, this issue really only affects the looting of containers for PTS template characters

  • Version 1.0.9 (2020/11/07)
    • With the greatly increased transmute crystal cap and the ability to "store" excess transmutes by reconstructing a 25-crystal item, Smart Looter will now auto-loot transmute geodes that contain 20 or fewer crystals, if doing so will not overflow the transmute crystal cap

  • Version 1.0.8 (2020/11/05)
    • API version bump for Update 28 (Markarth)

Not a big problem, just thought you should know.
Just downloaded addon and I love it.
Hmm, that's not supposed to happen. I've never run into that problem myself, and I do writs every day.

I'm leaning towards this being a conflict of some sort with another addon.

Does this happen for all containers that are fully auto-looted, or just those ones? If it's just those containers in particular, then I would strongly suspect conflict with some other addon.
I found out that it happens only on the Planks ( woodworking ).
It started with all of them, now it is only the one.

EDIT: This time it was Cloth. So it seems to be random. Don't worry about it. I thought it was a problem, but it seems to happen randomly.

The only context in which that is relevant is with chests in the open world (or nodes, for players without a Craft Bag). For all other container types--enemy corpses, backpacks, crates, etc.--each player has their personal loot instance. And of course, for dungeons and trials, the loot for all containers--including chests--are personally instanced for each player.

The ruleset is pretty simple--autoloot anything that won't consume additional inventory space--and I don't see the need to make it more complicated.

(Also, "the container does not reset with new stuff" is factually incorrect; once a chest in the open world is opened, it will despawn after a few minutes, even if nothing was looted from it.)
I wish you would make it a bit more complicated, because the number of open chests/troves I come across with 1 piece of junk in them has gotten out of hand really. The way some people use this addon wouldn't be the bane of every treasure hunter... if it looted chests clean and just deleted the stuff they didn't want from their inventory, instead of screwing over other player by leaving the junk in the chest.

As far as I have found, there are a set number of chests "up" at any given time, one sitting there with crap in it (even for a few minutes) basically affects anyone else in the entire zone instance who is farming chests, by blocking new ones from spawning. Some clown speed running a chest circuit and not looting everything in a popular zone, is basically messing with 5-10 other players at least in that instance. I end up having to move instances to get away from the people doing that... as it seriously affects finding chests/loot.

Anyhow, just a thought.
If you want people to auto-loot everything, then have them turn on auto-loot. The whole point of this is to have a quasi-auto-loot, mostly so that resource nodes are auto-looted for people with the Craft Bag and everything is is looted traditionally.

And if people want something to auto-junk or auto-destroy, that's what Dustman and other addons are for. The scope and purpose of this addon is well-defined and I have no intention of expanding it or otherwise changing the ruleset.

It would be great to be able to either take all loot, stay as it is, or just take non-inventory loot and close - for somewhere like IC where your inventory fills up wit crap really quick with vanilla autoloot but never has anything decent, and you want to loot keys/gold quickly.

I'd like to be able to auto-loot everything *except* the armor/weapons/jewelry worth zero gold. I know those items aren't auto-looted with your addon, but I want to auto-loot *everything* else... I think that's what the first comment was getting at too.

With the additional caveat of no stealing lockpicks when auto-looting stolen items, of course.

Although, the addon sounded pretty perfect until I got to the stealing part. If there was an in-game way of disabling that one feature, it would be perfect for me. Especially since I'm concerned it could potentially conflict with Ntak Loot'n'Steal while that feature is enabled.
No: STEALTH_STATE_DETECTED
No: STEALTH_STATE_HIDING
Yes: STEALTH_STATE_HIDDEN
Yes: STEALTH_STATE_HIDDEN_ALMOST_DETECTED
Yes: STEALTH_STATE_STEALTH
Yes: STEALTH_STATE_STEALTH_ALMOST_DETECTED

"Hidden" is crouched and undetected.

"Stealth" is when the player is mechanically hidden, via potion or Cloak. This is the main caveat, since potion stealth is fine for stealing, but Cloak stealth is not. Unfortunately, there is no way to discern if the player's stealth state is due to potion or Cloak. But since most Nightblade mains should know that Cloak does not protect them against theft detection, the addon assumes that attempts to steal while stealthed are attempts done under potion rather than under Cloak.

Question Truely Hidden, Or Just Crouched?

Stolen items and stolen gold that normally appear in a loot window will be auto-looted only if the player is currently in stealth.

Since gear is not stackable, they will never be auto-looted.
