special effects not showing, cannot click/activate, does not show up in "placed" tab

I've only started using EHT yesterday and unfortunately have been unable to do any special effects. When I hover my mouse over the effect on the drop down list, it should preview, but it flickers in and out of my view. I click it multiple times so that it activates and shows up under the "placed" tab, but nothing happens. I've tried...
