Dungeon Add-ons
I'm going to be redoing one of my characters and making it set up for PVE for dungeons and the like, is there any suggested add-ons? All I know to look for is one for buffs and I think that's the BuffTimer2 add-on. I have no idea if there is any others that are typically used or are useful.

Dungeon Tracker and Improved Death Recap are nice additions |

Yes, and it's a copy of other addons combining the hard work of several devs into one addon, just laughing them in their face. "And all the users are happy ". Always easy to build such "multi use" addons if they can benefit from other ideas and even take their code (sure, it's changed afterwards...)". Just like MapPins ist thaaaat cool and seriously did not copy any datamined data from other addons. Feel free to build your own mind about addons and the author. But I wont support these addons from Hoft, sorry. He could have mentioned where he got the stuff from, and even did in the beginning. And as some devs confronted him with what he shouldn't have done, what licenses he broke, he simply removed the source naming and said it's all his work?! If you are just interested into a working addon with all the comfort, which will be updated. Go for it. |
Hofts AddOns are great because they make it easy for the user, its not like he is selling is AddOn so I don't see a problem, plus he took the ideas and not the code. Isn't it the goal of all AddOns to make the game better? And you can't say that any of the Map AddOns gathered the Data by the Author alone, it was a community effort, and we as community deserve the best AddOn we can get from the Data!
OK Lets see: I have to tell a new player you need to get: Destinations, LoreBooks, Skyshards, Lost Treasure This 4 essential AddOns are combined 7,5MB in size! (because they have lot off similar options and many niche extras that not everyone needs) After you installed this 4 AddOns your Map will look like clusterfuk! So you have to go into each AddOn setting. Change the icon to black/whit and adjust the size of the icon Then as new player you have no idea what things are important so you have to look though all Destination settings, do I need to see this?? no idea. Do i need to see that extra eidetic memory books? uh no idea. And then you even have to adjust the map level of Skyshards because else some of them are hiding behind dungeon icons. At this point I tell them **** it, install Map Pins! No AddOn options. All integrated well into ingame menu. No need to adjust size. No need to adjust the icons so they fit together. No need to think if you need to see the pin for X?! And the best the addon is only 432kb. I wish we all woud stop with the licenses BS because its not like you will make multi million dollars with the addon if you license it, go work for ZoS if you want money they realy need someone to make their interface better TBH! We just lost Inventory Assistant because of this, and I'm a bit pissed, not about the author (best guy that fast implemented a lot of my suggestions etc) but about the way it got down and the reaction, it was such a great AddOn! Work together instead of against each other! |

This "license BS" as you'd like to call it isn't about us not making money, it's about acknowledgement of people's work when you use it. There would be alot less resentment if there was some honesty in where alot of the data in MapPins came from. Having options in an addon is not a downside. Being a few more MBs is not a downside. Not using certain libraries is not a downside. You're free to choose what you use and what you want to suggest to others but don't go claiming things you do not know much about when you are *promoting* something. ;) |

The adjust pin layer level is the best example, this option is something that the addon shoud not need, something that it shoud do on its own without the user having to be adjusted |

If it works everything is great. Getting a fanbase with work others do for you, and just putting something around it without saying thanks to the other work... Sad but true. Quote:
But he did not proof it and some users/devs know it better. At least some users listen to the "honesty" that Kyoma and me asked for instead of just using the "great addons because they make it easy". The other existing addons have been easy for them for years. Now some users just drop them because of some missing data which would make their gameplay easier after a patch (and they could collect and add the data themselves but it's most of the time easier to just complain until there is a new addon). I'm happy there are a lot users who do care about this and do not only care about "ease of use". |
