Improve equipped items, possible?

Yes (provided you have empty bag space).

The easiest way to code would probably be to leverage some gear-swap addon. Save the gearset and remove everything when you get to a craft station. Then re-equip when you leave the craft station. Depending on when the event fires, you might have to force a refresh of the list.

It'd be more difficult to have it handle gear as equipped, since there's more stuff to code, but it's still doable.
