Minion0.log

Here's the Minion0.log. The behavior is that it starts to load, seems to "discover" and load up the addons I use, and then simply hangs. The "working" bar bounces back and forth indefinitely, until I just close the app.

We are working on upgrading Minion to run on JRE8 and it looks to have fixed many of the edge case bugs. We are still testing and re-writing a few things. Hoping this new version will fix your problem. I'll certainly let you know when we have a version we can release for testing.
Any news yet? Been dying to get back into ESO with working addons!

Lightbulb Potential solution?!

I've just found a solution to this error (that worked for me, hopefully it would work for others as well).

I had to install updated versions of both 32 and 64 bit java runtime from oracle. (I'm running 64 bit windows 7, and using the 64 bit minion client, but still needed to install the 32 bit JRE to get it working).

The downloads I needed were available from https://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp using the windows offline downloads.

Cheers and good luck.

Still broken...

Tried installing 2.1.2, with Java 8.31 for both 32 and 64 bit (reinstalled both, removed any old versions). And what I get now, when I try to launch it, is a dialog that says "Failed due to exception from main class".

Seriously, guys... it's been months and this thing doesn't even launch. What are you doing that's so bizarrely different from all other Java programs out there? In general, I can run java apps with no difficulty.

Would be really nice to be able to manage my addons again...

Hi Eric,

We are trying to determine where this error is coming from. So since you have Java8 installed on your system already lets bypass our JVM by having you run the jar directly.

The following URL is a zip download of the Minion-jfx.jar and the required libs folder. Unzip the files and run the Minion-jfx.jar and see if it runs for you. If it doesnt please check if you have a .minion folder now and if you do please post the minion0.log.

Sorry - only just saw this!

I wish I got an email to alert me when new posts were added to this thread...

Anyway, I downloaded the Jar and had the following experience.

When I clicked on it, nothing happened at all. I brought up Task manager, and Java wasn't even executed... I don't get that much at all. The icon was Java, if I right-click and select "Open with" it wants to open it with Java SE Runtime, and if I select "Ok" to let that happen, it doesn't do anything. No .minion directory is created.

So, I went to a command line, and tried to execute the Jar from there manually. Nothing happened. Then I tried "java -jar Minion-jfx.jar" and finally at least I got something back, so I wasn't just crazy and somehow not able to execute a java program...

Here's what happened in the command line, including the first "null" attempt at executing the Jar directly.

Thanks EricBLivingston, this error is very helpful!

It looks like Minion is having trouble binding to localhost. Do you have anything strange in your hosts file perchance or anything else about your local network setup on your machine that might be out of the ordinary?

Minion uses a lib called juniuqe that binds to your localhost/127.0.0.1 so only 1 instance of Minion is run. If you accidentally launch Minion a 2nd time it checks if Minion is bound to localhost and if so it opens that instance of Minion instead of opening a new one. Many applications go this route to prevent multiple instances of the application loading so we must need to work on this to handle various situations better.

I'm sending this to our main java guy to see if he can see anything else with the error and what we can do about it.

Binding to Localhost

Well, there's nothing in my hosts file except adding an additional reference to localhost

Code:
#Hosts File
127.0.0.1 localhost PostgreSQL
But that shouldn't be any kind of problem.

I have many programs currently binding to localhost (127.0.0.1) with no trouble, so there's nothing wrong with my networking stack or anything odd like that going on.

What port in particular is it trying to bind on? Perhaps something has that port open already. But even so, there should be some more elegant solution to that problem than a low-level java error that simply fails to launch the app at all.

Can I get a version that doesn't try that check, and I can just manually ensure I'm not multiple-loading? (which I never do - I run it, update, and then quit the app each time, anyway)

Hi EricBLivingston,

We noticed that possibly in some instances Minion might try and bind twice at startup. We have removed the pre-loader from Minion where this is happening and since we really don't use it anymore we just removed it.

Can you try Minion 2.1.4-beta? The download is now available on http://www.minion.gg

If the main download still doesn't work for you can you try running the jar again to see if there is a new error? Thanks for your help!

Still the same behavior

The new beta behaves the same way - clicking on it fails immediately with a generic launcher error, and running the Minion-jfx.jar yields the following. Do you need me to download that other jar or is this output from the included jar of the .exe I downloaded sufficient?

Thank you, that error does help. I'm sorry it didnt fix it for you but at least we can rule out the pre-loader as being the culprit. It certainly is having trouble binding via JUnique. I need to talk with our main java guy about this further.

Any updates?

I love minion - I have been able to survive by running Minion on my laptop, and synchronizing my addon directory to my main gaming rig, so at least I can function. I think without Minion I'd likely not even play ESO after a while... things like inventory management are just too unbearable for me to do without addons, and addons without Minion are too unbearable to deal with over time!

Anyway, would love to run it on my main rig - any sign of hope or updates that could get over this java binding issue?

Thanks!

Finally resolved

I finally worked out what this was about. There was a piece of software (Computertime, a parental control thing) that injected itself into the TCP stack as a proxy. Somehow that disrupted Minion's ability to bind to that port. The problem wasn't universal, but is more than Minion - other Java-based programs were often unable to open ports on localhost as well, though everything else did fine.

Anyway, I uninstalled that software, rebuilt my TCP stack, and all is well now.

Just thought I'd let you know!

Wow, thanks for sharing the outcome of this with me. I wonder if there is anything we can do to detect and mitigate issues like this. I'll be sharing this with our java programmer to see if he has any ideas.

I'm glad you're up and running now.
