[Mac] Minion uses integrated graphics instead of discrete graphics

I just figured out how to see whether the low power Intel GPU or the higher powered ATI GPU is being used in my MacBook Pro. I was surprised to see that Minion is using the ATI GPU and as a result is acting as an energy drain on my system. I’m confused because Minion does not look like a graphically intensive app. You can see in the screenshot for Activity Monitor in the energy tab that under the “Requires High Perf GPU” Minion is labeled as Yes.

Interesting. Wonder if that is just done for all java apps.

I'll see what our java programmer says. He works on a macbook so he should know why.
