TraitBuddy  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)
Version: 9.1.0
by: Weolo [More]
TraitBuddy is an addon that tries to help you easily manage and keep track of what crafting research traits all your characters know. Great for those alt'o'holics out there just like myself.

I have expanded many game tooltips so that the information you want to see is right there on the item where you need it. There is also a custom screen if you prefer to see all the research in one place.

In case you are unsure what an alt is, it is a term to describe another/alternative character.

This addon is for Blacksmithing, Clothing, Woodworker and Jewellery traits as the other professions don't have traits you can research.

The latest version of addon library LibAddonMenu is required and will need to be installed separately.

Features
  • Expanded in-game tooltips:
Bag, loot, mail, buyback, trade, guild store search, guild store listings, links placed in chat, quest rewards, crafting, equipped items, and motifs
  • See the traits your character and your alts know
  • See the traits your character and your alts are researching
  • Automatically knows when your research has finished. You don't need to log on to your alts for it to update.
  • See the motifs your character and your alts know
  • Research overview screen
  • Compact movable window
  • Allows you to view any of your alts by simply picking them from a dropdown or using an icon bar
  • The screen you see will be just as if you had logged on to that alt
  • You choose which alts are included/compared
  • Customisable icon and text colours
  • Translated into English, French, German, Japanese and Russian
  • Supports gamepad mode
  • Ability to filter motifs, unknown, almost completed etc
  • List of all crafted sets with details of their bonuses and locations
  • Support for other addons such as Inventory Grid View and Inventory Insight
  • Icons in inventory
  • Plus a lot more...
Check out the attached screenshots for a small sample of what the addon offers.

What do the icons mean?
Green Tick
The selected character has researched that trait.

Orange Tick
At least one or more of your characters has completed researching that trait.
But not the currently selected character.

Blue Hourglass
The selected character is researching that trait.

Orange Hourglass
No characters have completed researching that trait but one or more of your characters have started to learn it.

The colours can be customised from the options.

How to set it up
  • Log in to each character one by one so TraitBuddy can automatically work its magic
  • Check out the tooltips on items with traits and motifs
There are 3 ways to open the TraitBuddy window
  1. Bind a key
  2. Use the buttons added to the corners of the crafting stations, skill screen and guild store
  3. Use the chat commands /traitbuddy and /traitbuddyoptions
Use any combination you prefer.
Binding a key is done from the normal ESO options screen
  • Bring up the ESO Options > Controls > Keybindings and scroll down until you see "TraitBuddy Addon"
  • Choose a key you would like to use to show and hide the window
  • Personally I bind the ] key

Info for other Addon makers
Detect when mousing over a trait in TraitBuddy
In your onLoad function

  2.     d(zo_strformat("DEBUG: OnTraitMouseUp <<1>> <<2>> <<3>>", tostring(craftingSkillType), tostring(researchLineIndex), tostring(traitIndex)))
  3. end

If you have ideas to improve this addon or have found a bug please either post on the comments section of this addon page or send me a private message.

I hope you like it and find it useful.

Thank you so much, this addon is fantastic and brilliant!

The only feature I can't figure out is "Icons in inventory similar to what ResearchAssistant used to do". I don't have any alts so perhaps that's why this feature does absolutely nothing. I tried disabling every addon except TraitBuddy and toggling the various inventory settings in it, and it still does nothing. All I see is the default white "looking glass" icon from the game.

My guess is that it's just for showing the research status of alts.

I've decided to disable everything in TraitBuddy related to inventory icons and instead install https://www.esoui.com/downloads/info...Assistant.html which highlights the most valuable items to deconstruct and only keeping the cheapest duplicate trait item for research.

The question is, could you please expand the addon page description about "Icons in inventory similar to what ResearchAssistant used to do" to perhaps say something about what the feature does in *your* addon?

My dream would actually be if your addon contained those "deconstruct this, keep this" hints that ResearchAssistant does (since I spend ages hovering over items to find out which duplicates I have), but I guess deconstructing duplicate traits goes against the altoholic nature of TraitBuddy so I understand if it's not in the scope of this addon. Especially since Research Assistant's algorithm seems quite complex and it would be annoying to reinvent that wheel. So I guess the best solution is to run both addons like I do.

Anyway thanks a lot, this addon is awesome!

Edit: After some more research, I can see that Research Assistant is the established "de facto" way to do this, and is relied on by other addons such as FCO ItemSaver. So definitely would be silly to reinvent the wheel. I'll use both addons side by side!

Ah cool, I am glad it's working again.
I have had key bind issues before myself in ESO with other addons.

Hi AlbertVonMoosseedorf

TraitBuddy can already stay open when you are at the crafting stations.
You have some options to use it.
You can bind a key in the options and pressing that key will toggle TraitBuddy open or closed whenever you need it.
Or you can click the flame icon I added, top right when using a crafting station. This button can also be turned off in the TraitBuddy options. "Show launch button on crafting stations".
Thanks for explanation. I checked my settings, everythis was ok and TraitBuddy opens with shortcut except at crafting stations. There I received the message "your inventory has been stacked up", translated from German . But on the bottom there ist no active key description. Next I checked all shortcut settings for CMD+B, which is the one for TraitBuddy. Nothing found, neither in standard settings, nor in the addon settings. Then I remarked that "Personal Assistant" had the shortcut B to open PA. I removed this and now I can open Traitbuddy at a crafting station. It seems, that PA does not distinguish between B and CMD+B

Question: Keep UI open while at crafting station

My main crafter is making items for analysis to level up some more crafters. To keep open the UI of TraitBuddy would be very helpful. I don't know if this should work or if it interferes with other addons I have. But I know, that I can keep "Inventory Insight" open while crafting.

No it was a failure on my end. Seems that the settings for SousChef got toggled off but, it hasn't been updated in a while. The tooltip changed after I updated TraitBuddy & wrongfully assumed TB was the culprit. Sorry for the bork on my part. Please continue making your awesome addon. ><

I only made the smallest of changes. I did not touch the tooltips.

ESO recipes are food, food does not have traits so TraitBuddy does nothing with those.
ESO patterns are housing items, housing items do not have traits so TraitBuddy does nothing with those.

Maybe I miss understood your message so I will double-check that all relevant tooltips are showing the TraitBuddy information.

Version 8.7.1

I just uploaded a new version of TraitBuddy, it will be available to download shortly.

Small logic change
Events from EVENT_NON_COMBAT_BONUS_CHANGED will only kick in after EVENT_PLAYER_ACTIVATED has occurred.

I will crack on and get the change released to try and stop that happening.

I have done some investigation, it's interesting the game is firing off the event EVENT_NON_COMBAT_BONUS_CHANGED before the player is activated with the event EVENT_PLAYER_ACTIVATED.

This can be seen as my variable player_activated is still set as false in the error message you shared.

I guess with the stat resets, but I did not have this error myself when I logged in.

This should not happen too often so a simple /reloadui will fix it for now. Or just load into the game next time does the same thing.

I will make a small logic tweak so if this ever happens again it won't error.
I've been having this issue pop up occasionally for awhile now. It always occurs after logging into a character (but not every time). Would love to see this updated soon.

Thanks Weolo!

That’s an odd rare corner case!

I doubt it will happen again.
